Enraged at being spurned, Indra unleashes the Samvartaka clouds, sending torrential rain mixed with hailstones upon Vrindavana. As the cowherds and their cattle are battered from every direction, they run to Krishna crying for protection. He calms them, declaring that the mountain, their true sustainer as cowherds, will surely shield them, and with his tender child-like arms, he uproots Govardhana from its base. Krishna holds the mountain aloft on his left hand alone, sheltering the Gopas with their belongings and their cows.
